For Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and extreme poverty, our advanced countries produce enough wealth; the challenge is to distribute it more fairly.
Professor Olivier De Schutter of the University of Louvain, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and extreme poverty, does not mince his words: in wealthy countries, the almost obsessive pursuit of growth has become “counter-productive.” It is no longer the appropriate response to today’s challenges and dysfunctions. He therefore urges us to “change our compass.” As he explains in the eponymous essay just published by Les Liens qui Libèrent—and in the interview he gave to Le Soir—we must shift toward “a steady-state economy.”
